5 Best Freemium Contact Form Plugins for WordPress

We’ll take a look at 5 popular contact form WordPress plugins that are freemium – they have a basic free version with paid upgrades. These are all plugins I’ve used – it’ll be Jotform vs Jetpack vs Ninja Forms vs Formidable Forms vs WPForms.

What is a Freemium Plugin, and Why?

Freemium is a term that means something is free, with option paid upgrades for the premium version. All of the plugins listed have free versions that offer basic features. If you just need a simple contact form, any of these will do. But if you want some special features like custom fields or integrations, then you would need to buy the premium version.

Freemium plugins are great for users who want something free and only need the basics without all the bells and whistles. They’re also great to try out the plugin and see if you like the style before upgrading to a premium version.

Top WordPress Form Plugins

When it comes to WordPress form plugins, there are dozens to choose from. But I’ll just review some of the most popular ones and ones that I’ve personally used:

  1. Jotform
  2. Jetpack
  3. Ninja Forms
  4. Formidable Forms
  5. WPForms

1. Jotform

Jotform is the only one on this list that is non-Wordpress specific. It is hosted on its own website, where you manage and create your forms, but you can then embed them into your WordPress site, or any website.

Some of the pros of Jotform is that has numerous widgets that you can add for features, allowing you to do almost anything you want with the form at its free level. And if you have clients or team members that need to access the form entries, but you don’t want them going into the WordPress site, Jotform is a great option for offsite management.

Some of Jotform’s cons is that their user interface for designing forms isn’t as smooth or intuitive as other ones I’ve used.

Jotform’s free version is full-featured, and limits you on the number of forms and submissions you can have. You can upgrade with a monthly cost if you need more forms, submissions, or storage starting at $19/month.

2. Jetpack

Jetpack isn’t specifically a form plugin – it’s a multi-feature plugin that has a contact form. It’s WordPress’s plugin that gives you a range of little features to help your WordPress site, including a contact form. It’s great if that’s all you need.

The pros of Jetpack’s contact form is that it’s super simple. You just pop it in as a widget or shortcode and that’s it. There’s not much configuration to it.

The cons of Jetpack’s contact form is that if you need something more complex than name, email, and message, you can’t do much else.

Jetpack is a free plugin, with a monthly upgrade starting at $3.50/month if you want access to some of Jetpack’s other features. But this will not improve the contact form’s functionality at all.

3. Ninja Forms

Ninja Forms is a great plugin right out of the box. The free version has a basic set of form fields such as checkboxes, radio buttons, address fields, etc, and will work for most websites’ needs.

The pros of Ninja Forms are that it has an incredible easy to use interface and makes setting up forms a breeze. The forms are also already styled to look good, so there isn’t much tweaking you’ll need to do.

The cons of Ninja Forms are that its additional add-ons can get pricey. If you need additional functionality like integrations with other widgets, integrations with your email marketing provider, or other special features, you can purchase individual add-ons. If its just one or two its fine, but if there are several features you need, the price can add up.

Ninja Forms offers it basic plugin for free, and additional add-ons can be purchased for about $49 each. They also have bundle subscriptions that give you a set of add-ons, starting at $99 per year.

4. Formidable Forms

Formidable Forms is a fairly full-featured plugin in the free version, It has a large variety of field types that let you build some pretty advanced contact forms.

Some of the pros of Formidable Forms are that it has a wider variety of field types that you can use in your forms, letting you create more complex forms on their free “Lite” version.

Some of the cons of Formidable Forms is that the features that are unlocked in their premium tiers come in tiered packages – you can’t buy features a la carte.

The free version of Formidable Forms is  “Lite,” while their “Formidable Pro” version starts at $99/year, with increasing sets of features as you increase in each tier level.

5. WPForms

WPForms is a simple, easy-to-use form plugin that has a standard set of fields. For most users, WPForms is a solid choice for setting up a standard contact form.

The pros of WPForms is that it’s simple to use. You can get up and running in no time. From the start, you can build from scratch or select templates, and there is a step-by-step process to guide you along the way – it’s perfect for beginners.

The cons of WPForms are that the fields offered in their free version are a bit limited, and you can’t view your form’s entries within WordPress unless you upgrade, which is typically a free feature in other plugins.

You can download the free version of WPForms from WordPress, while the premium version of WPForms starts at $79/year, and adds on more sets of features with increasing tiers.
