Blog Writing SEO Checklist Before You Hit Publish

You’ve got your blog post production down and you’re pumping out those articles. But you know that content creation is only one part of getting web traffic to your site – the other is having good SEO.

But you’re either writing so many blog articles or are just too busy with everything else to properly go through all the SEO checkpoints on your post. You don’t always do every single optimization, and you leave a few things out here and there.

It may save a few seconds, but you’re leaving good SEO juice on the table and missing out on a lot of potential web traffic.

After you finish writing your blog article, just go through this simple checklist before you publish:

1. Make the Title Searchable

If you’re writing your title for search engines and not clickbait, make sure it contains a phrase people would actually search for. Type your blog article topic into a Google search, scroll down to the bottom, and look at the “related searches” to see if you can use one of those phrases.

2. Make the URL Match the Title

Your URL should match your title, with dashes between each word.

3. Add a Main Image

Have at least one main picture in your article. It’s engaging, but can also be used for SEO. Make sure the title and alt tag of the image match your blog title.

4. Add Your Keyword Phrase Early On

It’s good to have it in the first sentence, but that doesn’t always fit. Just sure it’s in the first paragraph or two.

5. Use Headings to Break Up Sections

Not only is this good for SEO, it’s good for readability. Every few paragraphs or so, add in a heading. Make sure it’s using an H2, H3 or H4 tag. And in some of those headings, include a variation of your keyword phrase.

6. Add Internal Links

Within your article, take link some of your phrases or sentences to other articles on your blog with a similar topic. I would usually include 2 or 3. Also, go to 2 or 3 other articles on your blog and link to your current article (after it’s been published first, of course).

7. Link Externally

Add a link to related content outside of your site. This may seem counterintuitive – why would you want to direct people off your site, or give that precious link juice to another domain? Other than it being beneficial to your audience to reference helpful resources, there’s been tests done that prove external linking actually does improve your search engine ranking.

8. Add Some More Images

If my posts are under 500 words, I’ll usually just have one image. If they’re between 500 to 1000 words, I’ll add an extra image or two. If the article is over 1000 words I make sure to have an extra 3 or more images in addition to the primary image.

This helps break up the text and add some extra image SEO.

9. Check that Meta

Make sure your meta titles and meta descriptions are there. They’re usually ignored because they seem less important, but they matter.

Whenever you finish writing a blog article, go through this check list before you schedule or publish it. Sure, it may take you an extra 10-15 minutes to go everything. But you’ve already spent an 1-3 hours writing this post. Invest a little more time to get as much out of it as you can.
